The competition was old school: no prizes. Just friends getting together for a great workout and some beer.
“And all the money that was raised, every single dime, went straight to Kenya,” says NorCal CrossFit owner Jason Khalipa.
It was all part of CrossFit’s Hope for Kenya project, focused on improving the conditions of those living in the 250-square-mile rural area surrounding Mombasa. The fundraiser workout—a 12-minute AMRAP of 50 air squats, 30 push-ups and 15 pull-ups—is being done by dozens upon dozens of boxes worldwide.
Khalipa and a group from NorCal CrossFit took the 20-hour flight to Kenya to help build two schools with the money his affiliate raised.
“One school in Kenya can benefit so many children it’s unbelievable,” he says. “The Kenyan people just need opportunities, whether that be a school, water or crops … . They’re not looking for handouts. They just want … to start their progression.”
As CrossFitters, we have a duty to take “our amazing CrossFit community and help other people,” Khalipa adds.
“We’re all such happy people,” he says. “Why don’t we take our funds and help support other people and allow them to be just as happy?”
